Crispin Jones, who designed the Mr Jones Watches explains the process which went into creating them: "In 2004 I produced a series of one-off watches. The watches were all hand built by me using electronic components. They had mainly LCD or LED displays and each one had some unusual feature. In a way these watches were critical design object - each one was the embodiment of a social critique or observation. This series of watches was well received and featured in a number of exhibitions (the Summissus model was most recently featured in the exhibition "On Time" at the Museum for Design in Zurich during Summer 2007). The watches used small, rechargeable batteries, which meant that they needed to be plugged into a charger every few days. For this reason (as well as the complexity of building them) they weren't really viable for production (I did though produce and release a booklet which documented the project and which is still available for sale here). Reflecting on this series of watches I started to become interested in developing a series for production, which featured some of the same ideas as the one-offs. |
Above from left to right: Summissus, Adsiduus I and II A note on the names - I gave all the watches in the first series latin names, this was meant to be ironic but in fact just looked pretentious. I much prefer the English names which the new Mr Jones Watches have. |
